Heat waves are breeding heaven for creepy crawly’s, especially spiders.
The spider season in the UK normally sees a peak around September time, but the unusually high temperatures have caused an abnormal change in the spider populations. They’re breeding earlier than usual and the offspring are larger than normal!
The country has been basking in a heatwave for more than two weeks, with temperatures in the high twenties almost every day.
The autumn equinox – September 22 – usually marks the time when large male house spiders are on the move to seek out fertile females to breed, with dark corners behind settees, under baths or inside cupboards the favourite locations.
But the good news is, these giants prefer to run away than attack humans – and their bites aren’t harmful, although they can sting a little if they manage to pierce the skin.
There are no inherently deadly species of spider found in the UK as their venom is designed for killing much smaller, simpler creatures for food, such as insects.

Giant house spiders, scientific name Eratigena atrica, are larger and bolder than the more common ‘ordinary’ house spiders.
Pest controllers recommend sealing cracks in doors and removing plants from the outside of the house to prevent spiders entering your home.
