Lightning Network Might Not Provide The Solutions That It Promises

“A purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash would allow online payments to be sent directly from one party to another without going through a financial institution.”

That is a direct quote from the original Bitcoin paper that was shared by none other than Satoshi Nakamoto.

However, as of late, Bitcoin is only used for payments whenever anyone needs to trade their Bitcoins for another currency or vice versa. It may be used for actual payments but, at the current moment, due to a variety of present issues, this seems unlikely.

Why?

Transaction costs are high while transaction times are slow, and no one can really wait for hours to have a payment transfer completed for them.

Micropayments, which were one of the goals of Bitcoin, seem impossible to achieve due to the same issue.

The most beneficial point of Bitcoin that also works in its favor for now is its high value and incredible reach throughout the world.  To those people who are not familiar with cryptocurrencies, the term Bitcoin is cryptocurrency. Those words are interchangeable for a layman.

However, that level of familiarity has come at a price for Bitcoin, which has now been reduced to a savable commodity than the “digital cash” that it was envisioned to be.

That being said, select teams have been working on finding a solution for this problem, a problem which they expect to resolve sooner than later.

One of such solutions that was also recently deployed for initial testing is called the Lightning Network.

About the Lightning Network

The Lightning Network is a proposed improvement for the Bitcoin network, which when developed and deployed completely, will work towards resolving the scalability issues that the network currently faces.

By doing that, it aims to cut transactions times and in turn, their costs.

To summarize its functions, it proposes to work by using payment channels that are pre-funded by users’ agreement.

These transactions are also off the primary blockchain and thus would be able to provide faster transfer times along with lower transaction costs.

If it works, then the Lightning Network could prove to be very beneficial. However, with the recent test deployment of the Lightning Network, a few questions have risen and have been circling around the community.

A few concerns that have been raised

Since the network is currently being updated with development efforts, saying anything on its efficacy will be impetuous and thus these posed concerns can simply be considered as points that the network developers can address during the development phase.

Building upon the notion that the Lightning network works with pre-funded payment channels that still ensure transparency with each user’s own Bitcoin reserve, one of the aspects that is troubling a few members in the community is that the demand for pre-funded channels could be too high on the Lightning network.

To support this claim, they refer to how people might want to fund payment channels all at once, which might make the solution to create another problem of its own, specifically, by not being able to meet the demands of the number of payment channels required.

Another concern that is being highlighted is that people might choose to maintain low balances in the pre-funded payment channels, and then that will cause an issue of the Lightning network payment channels not having enough pre-funded resources to work with.

In addition to the above, the possibility of fluctuation in the funding of these payment channels is also a cause for concern, as the point that is proposed here is that these payment channels might have enough funds to work with one day, only to have low funds in the pipeline the next day that would be insufficient to meet the requirement of a transfer.

One proposed solution for these problems is to have larger payment channels open and sufficiently funded at all times, but for that, the network will require users to meet new kind of contracts and that would present an issue of its own again.

Ideally, these posed concerns can be resolved before the network is fully deployed, otherwise the Lightning network might be more trouble and hassle as opposed to less.

With the growing solutions provided by the likes of Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies, it is not that far-fetched to imagine that those newer counterparts – which ironically were largely inspired by Bitcoin and improved upon its incomparable achievements – might replace Bitcoin, at least for its vision of becoming the primary method of easy payment transfers.

Paul Krugman and His Disdain for Cryptocurrencies

You might have heard of the infamous “Bitcoin Is Evil” post. If not, then you should visit its link and read it. It is a real page-turner.

…

Now that you might have read it, the frustration that you could be feeling is similar to how the cryptocurrency community felt upon reading Paul Krugman’s most recent rage attack upon cryptocurrencies.

In what most people termed as “uncalled for”, Krugman, a popular economist, took advantage of the recently deployed 280 character limit by Twitter in a no holds barred approach towards what could very well be his favorite subject to drag down: cryptocurrencies.

The Krugma Twitter Stream

In a recent string of tweets this Sunday, January 21, Krugman started off with comparing Bitcoin to gold. His tweets and approach then went south not long after, where he started questioning the very utility of cryptocurrencies and alluded how the mode is only meant for transactions meant for criminals.

“Cryptocurrency lets you make electronic transactions; but so do bank accounts, debit cards, Paypal, Venmo etc. All these other methods involve trusting a third party; but unless you’re buying drugs, assassinations, etc. that’s not a big deal.” Krugman stated in one of the tweets.

He did not stop there and went on with further comments that, even for Krugman’s approach towards cryptocurrencies fell flat, which was a shame coming from an economist of his stature.

For instance, he questioned cryptocurrency by comparing it to fiat and gold, asking while fiat is “backed by governments” and gold is “actually useful for some things, like filling teeth and making pretty jewelry”, what drives the value of cryptocurrencies?

He then answered his own question by his own understanding, and stated that cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin’s price is “driven purely by speculation — by what Robert Shiller calls a natural Ponzi scheme, in which early entrants make money only bc others buy in.”

As critical as Krugman is of cryptocurrencies, he is still a revered economist. That is why, when someone like him makes unknowledgeable comparisons only for the sake of slamming something that he does not personally like, is beyond the scope of comments.

Calling cryptocurrencies a Ponzi scheme is similar to calling a hedge-fund one, or for that purpose, even any other potential profit bearing asset that is not fiat.

However, Krugman did not stop with statements that and further questioned the usefulness of Blockchain technology, something that has been looked into and adopted by respected and blue chip corporations all over the world (you might have heard of IBM and Maersk’s worldwide deployment of blockchain recently).

“So the blockchain is interesting, but not yet clear whether it’s useful for anything. And investing in Bitcoin still looks a lot less reasonable than investing in cold fusion.”

Putting Krugman’s dislike of cryptocurrencies aside, no one can actually question the utility and technological advances of blockchain unless they are coming from a place of immense ignorance and distaste. It is akin to calling the Internet ‘sinful’ during the 90s.

Most people that are not into cryptocurrency, are at least, aware of  blockchain technology and the potential it has to revolutionize aspects of the world. It has been adopted by business corporations, financial institutions, banks, governments, and even by non-profit organizations, primarily, due to the fact that is has significant potential across many industries.

Krugman might be a really good economist, but his judgment clearly gets clouded by his hostility for cryptocurrencies whenever he talks about them.

While we can respond to each of Krugman’s tweets with long paragraphs of our own, responding to his very last tweet with this link of IBM’s blockchain business division would suffice and let those in their right mind know that almost all of Krugman’s other comments were also based out of contempt than his actual analysis (which again, might not have as much substance as we’d have hoped for).

Qtum is Making leaps In Blockchain Development

If you have been following the developments in blockchain technology, then chances are that you have heard of Qtum by now,  a Singapore-based blockchain platform that is certainly unique in its own right.

What makes Qtum different from other blockchain platforms out there is its hybrid development model. Taking notes from two of the most popular blockchain networks in the world, Bitcoin and Ethereum, Qtum combines “a modified Bitcoin Core infrastructure with an inter-compatible version of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)”, allowing it to achieve results that neither of those blockchain networks can obtain individually.

For instance, by combining Bitcoin’s core and sturdy structure and the virtually unlimited opportunities that Ethereum brings with smart contracts, Qtum develops never seen before solutions on blockchain platforms for its partners.

If recent developments are any indication, then it is safe to say the world has started taking notice of this unique blockchain platform since its launch.

Just take the last week’s developments into consideration

Since last week, Qtum has joined hands with China’s Netflix counterpart; has initiated a blockchain research center with two tech giants in China; and has entered into a collaborative partnership with a cryptocurrency investment bank.

Collaboration with Baofeng

To cover the aforementioned points in a detailed manner, it was announced last week that Qtum has partnered with Baofeng Bokocloud – a video and audio streaming service in China – to develop, what will be, the first-ever blockchain consensus network (BCN) service.

Being one of the primary video players in the country and sporting over 200 million users, Baofeng will not just develop its own video distribution, copyright and payment protection and processing functions on Qtum, but will also provide the Qtum network the facility to run more than 50,000 full nodes on its Bokocloud service.

It is prudent to mention that the Bitcoin network currently has around 10,000 full nodes, with Ethereum having that number locked around 20,000 for now.

This partnership in itself, is a massive achievement for Qtum, but it is not stopping there.

Joining hands with the BTNfoundation and 360 Blockchain research center

It was also announced that Qtum will be collaborating with the BTN Foundation and 360 Blockchain Research Center in order to develop a blockchain research laboratory.

The initiative will be looking after new methods of utilization for the blockchain technology along with researching  functions such as next-generation smart contracts, new consensus models, and decentralized storage.

The 360 Blockchain Research Center is spearheaded by Qihoo360 through a subsidiary named 360 Finance. Qihoo360 is China’s leading cybersecurity solutions provider.

Partnership with banca.world

Qtum will also work with Banca, where the decentralized, cryptocurrency investment bank will be building its platform on Qtum.

It was announced that through the use of multiple functions, the blockchain platform developed on Qtum for Banca will aim to “tackle problems faced by the financial industry.”

Banca’s core team is comprised of individuals from Wall Street and Silicon Valley. The decentralized investment bank aims to bring Wall Street to blockchain by the usage of big data and artificial intelligence (AI), among other functionalities.

In addition to the aforementioned partnerships, it was also reported through Nasdaq that Qtum is looking towards implementing an x86 virtual machine (VM) in order to support multi-language smart contracts.

It was reported that Jordan Earls, Qtum’s co-founder, aims to improve upon EVM by this planned x86 VM.

With this news of multiple projects and the planned upgrade, it certainly seems like Qtum is one to watch in terms of blockchain technology. We cannot wait to see what the project comes up with next and how it can work towards the betterment of the blockchain community by creating more opportunities during its journey of growth.

Arsenal Sign First Ever Cryptocurrency Contract In The Football Industry

That’s right, the highly celebrated English football team is stepping into the world of cryptocurrency. No, not by releasing their own token through an Initial Coin Offering but through sponsorship deal with a US based gaming company called Cash Bet.

This deal will see the two organizations collaborate in the department of marketing, Arsenal will help Cash Bet to gain awareness for it’s token generation event via their global brand on the football stage. Their stadium ‘The Emirates Stadium’ has a capacity of just under 60,000 and appear to millions of viewers on television frequently

At the current moment, neither party has confirmed the exact numbers involved in terms of pricing of the deal. Yet, this will mark a first occurrence, the first time that a widely known sports team has partnered with a company that is directly involved in the cryptocurrency space.

A Bolstering of the Cryptocurrency Market Despite Regulatory Concerns

It’s certainly coming at an interesting time too, the past few months have been rife with concerns of extreme regulation on the cryptocurrency space, with some concerns of there being banning in significant countries like South Korea. As of late, people from the EU and other institutions that are in control of banking at various levels, institutions like the International Monetary Fund have called for global coordination on the regulation of Bitcoin.

Regulatory bodies in the UK have also expressed concerns about CFDs in Bitcoin, calling them highly speculative and very risky.

Over the course of the past few months, regulators have also been very keen to discuss tax codes on the emerging markets of cryptocurrencies.

Regulators keep stressing that they are issuing these warnings to protect consumers in several ways, such as, protecting them against money laundering and against losing their capital in highly risky and speculative investments.

Yet, an event, or rather, partnership like this for an emerging company like Cash Bet, who is about to conduct their Initial Coin Offering, legitimizes the space and new companies further, further integrating cryptocurrencies and it’s various use cases into global society.

This also exposes more people to the rising phenomenon of the Initial Coin Offering, a funding mechanism which came about recently, that allows project leaders to issue tokens for their system in exchange for prominent cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The investors in these tokens typically do so because they believe that company issued tokens will rise in value or because they think that they will be participants in the system and thus, need to use the tokens to do so.

CashBet Comments & Partnerships

The gaming company, CashBet stated recently that Arsenal would be it’s official partner and said that the English Club would be “the first major team in world football to officially partner with a cryptocurrency”.

According to it’s website, the company has partnered with several other players in the gaming market like Quickfire, Storm, Booming-games.com, Playscreen, Bliffi, hotstreakstudio.

They also state that they were “founded in 2012 by a team of industry veterans with a vision of using their extensive gaming software experience to build a next generation mobile-first monetization platform for social and mobile gaming. Previously, the team successfully built and sold 2 other gaming platforms to CyberArts and US Digital Gaming (USDG).”

The company is seeking to raise capital in the range of $40 – $70 million via their Initial Coin Offering.

Arsenal Comments

Vinai Venkatesham, Arsenal’s chief commercial officer, said: “We are pleased to welcome CashBet Coin as our partner. We are looking forward to working with CashBet Coin as they launch their new cryptocurrency.”
